Biphasic sleep log, week 1

[Week 2] [Week 3] [Week 4] [Current week]

March 1, 2007 - [10:15pm] Started with a nap attempt at 8:30pm as decided upon, woke up at 9:30pm to the phone ringing (the call stopped just as I answered it - I hate it when that happens).  Just before 10pm the phone rings again and this time I get it - my younger brother looking for his girlfriend (whom is not here).  So it seems clear that my sleep was interrupted by the phone rining as 60 minutes is not enough to get to the 70-90 minute zone of restful sleep - still some sleep is better than none.  As such I have not gone back to sleep and started this log to keep a track of my progress. Note to self: Take phone off hook during naps!

March 2, 2007 - [7:40am] When I was awake at just before 6am I felt tired, added another 90 minutes to the alarm and went back to sleep (I have an assignment due soon enough and I wanted to work on a bit today).  Because of my habit of drinking Coke Zero (something I might have to stop) I zombied out of my bed at 2:30, 4am and just before 6am - so far it is hard to see the 90 minute cycle in practice.  I woke up at 7:30am with the alarm, still feeling a little tired - time will tell if this tiredness remains over the comming days as I force my body into a routine.

[10:18pm] I just woke up after what I think is 90 minutes of sleep, at least that is when my alarm went off.  I didn't have too much of an issue with getting up but do feel a still bit tired.  We shall see what I feel like at 1:30am when it comes time for my core sleep.  To prevent myself being woken up I put the phone off the hook when I went to sleep - this could become a regular habit with biphasic sleep.

[11:09pm]  After just over an hour awake since the nap I feel better already - more awake - maybe because I did the dishes during the post wake up period while I was still groggy - now I feel ready for almost anything.

March 3, 2007 - [6:10am] Up at 6am on a Saturday, and I usually sleep in for at least another 4-6 hours.  I went to bed right on the dot of 1:20am, allowing myself 10 minutes to get to sleep.. I don't really feel all that tired - I will see what happens as the day goes by.

[10:10pm] Woke up after nap at 10pm with no problems.

March 4, 2007 - [6:49am] Sleeping 6 hours a day tends to highlight any gaps in hobbies/work to do.  Here I am, nearly 7am on a Sunday wondering why I am awake this early.  I guess as I get into the year I will have more things that I need to do.

[ 9:00am] It has been about 3-4 days of 6 hours a day now, and at this moment (9am) I storta feel tired, but not really sleepy.  I will keep working on this for the week coming up unless it seems that I am getting worse than last year with regular drifting off in classes.  This seems to be a leason - if you don't know to do when sleeping only six hours a day, then polyphasic sleep would not be for you.

[10:00pm] Just woke up from my nap about 5 minutes early, so I chalk that one up to the rule of 90 rather than just co-incidence.  Feeling the usual tiredness I get from just being awake, but that should start fading pretty soon from experience.  If I get to the end of this week not really feeling tired, chances are I will keep on for longer, likely at least 30 days.

March 5, 2007 - [1:20am] It is about 10 minutes before I usually go to sleep and I am feeling tired, which means either I am adjusting, or I am starting to wear myself thin.  If I am able to go through tomorrow without too much hastle, then this sleep pattern might be worth it.

[6:30am] GOOD MORNING! You know I used to hate people who seemed to be that enthusiastic when I had just woken up, but to wake up without being tired?  WOW! I stayed in bed today not because of the 'I am still tired, I need more sleep' factor, but more because I wanted to relax a bit more - just laying down without really feeling the need for sleep.  Six hours of sleep a day might be enough.

[5:30pm] Ah, back after a couple of classes for the day.  Maybe the subject material was interesting enough, or hopefully the 6 hours of sleep I get in a day is finally paying off.. I will see over the next week.

[9:10pm] Grrrr! 30 minutes into the nap I get woken up by my younger brother! I have let him know that I have my nap at this time, and asked him to avoid doing this in the future.  I will have to re-work the nap after he is gone. Note: Make sure that everyone who would be likely to drop by at any time knows about the nap.

[11:40pm] In the end I wasted about an hour before my younger brother was gone and I could go back to my nap.  I feel a little groggy waking up now, but that might have happened any way - can't be sure.

March 6, 2007 - [6:15am] I am feeling a little tired after the sleep today - Maybe I didn't sleep right or the nap being interrupted impacted me more than I thought, even though I did have the full nap after he was gone.  I shall see what happens today.

[7:55am] Maybe the tiredness was just me waking up? Nearly 8 am now and I am feeling well enough.  Ready for a 45 minute test that will be happening in about 2 hours from now. :) Today might be a good test of how much impact 6 hours sleep has.

[1:10pm] Seems to be more than just tiredness, still drifted off during my lunchtime class.. will have to keep an eye one that one.  I might have to go up to a total of 7.5 hours rather than 6 - we shall see.

[10:15pm] The nap went about the same as usual, no interruptions tonight.  I seem to have a bit of a headache, so I have taken something to get rid of that.

[1:00am] Observasion: I just had to note this as it is something I have noticed over the last few days of adjustment - after the nap I seem to be more awake, more refreshed.  Often I might feel a little groggy for a little while after being awake, but then I am more awake than I would usually be at this time of the night.  It is almost 1am, and by now I would be yawning quite a bit and maybe nodding off.. but with biphasic sleep I am just starting to feel tired now in anticipation of my core sleep.

March 7, 2007 - [6:15am] Waking up at 6am is getting to be pretty easy at this time.  What I mean by that is that the alarm goes off, I am able to get up and out of bed without just hitting snooze and going back to sleep as I have done at times in the past.  Today is a busy enough day, though one of the classes today is canceled because the tutor is not going to be here today - which means there will be more of a break there than usual.

[9:15am] During the first class today (it is a flexi class so I can work on pretty much anything, but the tutor for one of the subjects is here so I can talk to them about thier class if I need to), and I am still wide awake - news of the results of a networks test yesterday (I passed! Yay!!) have bostered my spirits a little bit and possibly contribute to my current wakeful state.  I have slowly started getting used to HTML coding so that I can better present this website - just adding the background image makes it look more profesional than just black text on white background. :)

[4:00pm] Being more awake does help.  I was working on a cashflow spreadsheet in Excel and kept having problems sorting out the GST refund/payment.  I kept at it, and finally managed to find the one thing I was missing in the calculation and finished it.. means I don't have to be at the business class tomorrow!!

[8:15pm] Well, nap time! My younger brother and his girlfriend are in the lounge right now, planning to watch a DVD - they know that I am napping though, so they should be able to keep the noise level down.. edit: They did keep the noise down, I got my nap.

[10:10pm] Woke up from the nap feeling refreshed as always - even managed to watch a movie, "The Covenant."  Watching a movie this late on a monophasic sleep pattern would have had me drifting off, especially since I was laying down on the bed watching it - but with biphasic sleep for the last week I managed to watch the movie without even one mininap.  I think I am starting to adjust quite well, and will likely keep the habit of biphasic sleep after the 30 day trial, even if I have to up the hours to get 7.5 hours, which so far is not looking that likely.
