Biphasic sleep log, week 2

[Week 1] [Week 3] [Week 4] [Current Week]

March 8, 2007 - [7:30am] I did a bit of tossing and turning over the night, even woke up a couple of times (that I can remember) - the first time was sometime after 3pm so I at least got in one cycle - maybe 2 or three if I just woke up during the middle of the cycles.  Anyway, I have been awake for an hour and a half now and I feel great, ready to take on another day.  Who would have thought it? Only 6 hours total sleep a day? I think I would have been tired at this time if I was just taking those hours in one block each day.. the nap really helps me regain focus until I go to sleep - extending me for that much more.  Even if I had to go back to 7.5 hours of total sleep, I would keep the biphasic pattern since I have seen benefits.

[9:30am] Found a picture for the top of the page - needed to edit it a little for it to work with the background.  I might need to work with the image a little more, but for now it is there, it adds some color to the page.

[3:48pm] Finally got around to editing the picture at the top - it now looks better than it did before (YAY!).  Even with something as routine as cleaning up an image I was able to stay awake, even this long after my last core sleep.. Things are going well.

[10:57pm] I woke up from my nap a little while ago, not sure I really did more than drift off for a bit.  Come to think about it I wasn't all that tired going into the nap which might have had something to do with it? I should be good to go for the main sleep at 1:30am.

March 9, 2007 - [7:09am] I didn't sleep all that well last night because the dog we have here was barking quite a bit from about 3am - at least I managed to get at least one cycle in.  If I am lucky I got two or three of the cycles in.  Fortunately I don't feel all that tired, which is good because I do have a full day ahead of me and I can't really afford to be drifting off because I didn't get a good enough sleep the night before - I shall see how things go.

[4:40pm] Ah, back - finally.  I got through until now without even the slightest bit of tiredness.  Mission acceived for the day, I got an assignment finished and handed in.  Each day that passes seems to be easier on me..

[10:16pm] I woke up just after the alarm, and I still feel groggy.  Thing of note is that sometime before the alarm went off the dog was barking (Again!).  I wish I knew what was getting into him to such an extent that he has to bark at late night/early morning, even when I am sleeping, but I do have my thoughts about that.  Anyway, the barking dog thing is a challenge I would have had, even with monophasic sleep, so I will have to sort this out or maybe suffer sleepless nights because of it.  In the flat I am in we are not allowed dogs, but up until the last few days there has been no problems with him... if he is barking because there is something I should know about, I would rather keep him here than not - despite the occasional problem is is a good guard dog.

I think the nap was successful this time, but I will have to wait and see.

March 10, 2007 - [6:46am] The dog still barked into the night, causing me to wonder if I was awake between cycles or woken up.. I think I at least got two of the cycles and could even remember bits of dreams just before the alarm went off.  This makes it 9 or 10 days where I have had about 6 hours of sleep on each - I think I would have been a lot more tired on a monophasic sleep pattern, but I am not about to switch back to test this out.

[10:15pm] Only very slightly tired while waking up from the nap - just wait a few more minutes and this shall be gone while I got around to doing things until my main sleep at 1:30am :).

March 11, 2007 - [1:14am] Well, almost bedtime, and I am starting to feel tired.  The body seems to get used to any routine that you set it.  My time over the last hour has been spent productively working understanding HTML, and in this case frames.  As a result I now understand frames but will not yet implement this knowledge on this website since there is not enough content yet to warrant having frames just this moment.  I will be using another website I maintain as a test of this, working to maintain a no-frames version for those whose browsers either don't handle frames, or have them turned off.

[6:34am] I woke up in the middle of the night, checked the time, remembering it to be about 4:30am, leaving a perfect 90 minutes for the next cycle.  One minute later I was back to sleep like usual when waking up like that - getting all three sleep cycles in for the morning.  I have talked about biphasic sleep with people, and one of the reactions I got when I said I sleep 6 hours a day is disbelief since they need at least 8 hours of sleep or they are not in good shape.. I guess it is for people like that which is the reason why I keep this log - to show my progress day by day.

[11:38] Been awake since the alarm went off at 10pm.  I feel a little tired, but nothing really major.. The main thing is I can still sit down and do nothing and not fall asleep.  Tomorrow has a couple of afternoon classes, but Tuesday will be the test of my wakefullness.  One or two times during that day I usually drift off into mini-naps.. I should keep a count of them as they happen.. hopefully though, being 11 days into biphasic sleep means I am adjusted enough that I am getting all the sleep I need.

March 12, 2007 - [5:46am] I woke up at 5:30am after going to sleep at the usual time - this is about 30 minutes earlier.  I don't recall my sleep being interrupted, even by a barking dog, so running a calculation it would say that I would have done cycles of 80 minutes each - I will keep that in mind, even if it doesn't really make much of a difference either way.

[3:39pm] I was drifting in and out of the computer systems class this afternoon - maybe it was because I already knew the content, or maybe 6 hours is just not enough.   Usually right now I would be in the practical for that class, but the tutor just had to change the time so that it is now Tuesday 3-5 rather than today.. makes it a pain coming in for one 2 hour class on Mondays.  Grrr!

[11:10pm] Woke up from the nap tired, and now about an hour later I am still tired - and capable of drifting off into mini-naps.  Perhaps this is the result of the fact I have been doing about 6 hours of sleep for the last 11 or 12 days, or the body is just going through the last of the adjustment.  Or maybe I just can't get by on the 6 hours a day? I will keep doing this while there are no real problems - allowing for a little more time if the body still needs to finish adapting - better to be sure this is not an adapting issue.. A lot of stuff fails when you just quit at signs of problems rather than holding on - but I do realize that soon I might have to give up on 6 hours of sleep a night.  I just have to know if it is possible or not - I would not be satisfied with quiting because I would always wonder about it.

March 13, 2007 - [10:02am]  Woke up with the alarm at 6am as I often do, and hopped right out of bed, not really feeling that tired.  Just finished the first class today and I didn't fall asleep - a thought came to me as I was just logging in - most of the classes I might be nodding off in are mid-day to afternoon - getting closer to my nap time.. that could be something to think about.

[1:44pm] Okay, I didn't feel tired during that last class - and I have just over an hour until my next class.  I think I have a good basic understanding of HTML, so I am now looking at Java as something to learn.  I figure that since the free web host I am using here supports Javascript that I might as well have a look at it and pick up a thing or two between the nap and sleep..

I learned just before the class that daylight savings ends this Sunday here in New Zealand.. at 3am the clock goes back an hour to 2am - most people would just take the extra hour and go 'Yay! I get to sleep in a bit!!'.. however, if I am going to keep to my schedule, I will have to go to sleep an hour early to compensate - that way I will wake up as usual on Monday morning.

[11:12pm] I went to sleep at 9pm, set the alarm program for 10:30pm to compensate - only I forgot to turn the sound back up (opps).  I do have a sorta standby though, and that woke me up.  You see, the program I use starts at a low volume and over 5 minutes it raises it to maximum volume.  I have a cable that splits the audio between my 2.1 speaker system (which his its own volume control), and my headphones (which have no volume control).. so while the speakers were disabled, my headphones started getting the the point where I woke up hearing one of the songs that I have set with the program.  In the end it was about 30 minutes more..

March 14, 2007 - [11:53am] Busy day today.. had just logging in during my lunch break.  I had a good enough sleep last night, I have been able to stay awake and focused, but the afternoons are usually a test of how good my sleep has been.  We shall see how things go.

[11:04pm] I woke up about an hour before (as usual) by my alarm.  I have just spent the last 40 minutes watching an episode of Stargate SG-1 - all is good.  I am getting ready to watch 'the Grudge 2' - that will take me sometime to just before when I am to go to sleep..  As of right now I don't feel tired, the usual for after a good solid nap.  This makes day 14, or two weeks since I started this bi-phasic sleep experiment, and I plan on seeing a full 30 days in at least.
