Biphasic sleep log, week 5

[Week 1] [Week 2] [Week 3] [Week 4] [Current week]

April 1st, 2007 - [7:25am] My nap last night was interrupted - lasted only a total of one hour and fifteen minutes from when I went to bed to waking up.  However, I woke up from the nap feeling pretty good and pushed onto a core sleep that was a little latter than I am used to.  The core sleep (still 4.5 hours unless I decide to go for 3 hours instead) went well and I woke up with the alarm, though I did feel awake before then and was thinking of getting up.  I had a look over the last month of entries, and I found that over the last month I hardly ever over or underslept - those were usually the result of things outside my control like visitors, phone ringing or the dog barking.

Keeping to this schedule means I have a 14 hour a week advantage over someone who sleeps 8 hours a day.. that would be 588 hours per year (or almost 15 weeks of 40 hours per week).  Now, if I drop down to 4.5 hours total sleep, and adjust well, that is a saving of 24.5 hours per week.. which would essentially give me an 8 day week in comparison.  One can only dream of the advantages of this.

Well, time to get some breakfast, then onto getting onto more of a report that I need to get done.

April 2nd, 2007 - [8:15pm] Nap lastnight went well, as will as the sleep this morning.  I don't often feel all that tired - and I am curious to try this.. I am going to have a go at getting my core sleep down to 3 hours and seeing if I can handle that or not.  The curiousity is just killing me here, so better to put that curiousity to bed.. excuse the pun - that is my type of sense of humor at times.  Anyway, I should be heading off for my nap.. then to stay awake until 3am to catch 3 hours of sleep.  Wish me luck.

[11:20pm] Nap went off without a hitch, still feeling a little tired at an hour and twenty minutes past when I woke up, but otherwise alert.  If I do succeed at getting down to four and a half hours of sleep total a day I am going to get a lot of sideways looks, that I am sure of - but if I am able to function well on that amount of time it will be worth it.  This will mean I have to be strict about not oversleeping at all, as it is hard to claim I am not being sleep deprived if I actually take naps during class. This will be a good gauge of how people would react should I eventually try and adapt to uberman's sleep.

April 3rd, 2007 - [2:43am] Almost time for the first 3 hour sleep.  I am starting to feel tired, so I should be able to sleep easily.  The only question in my mind is if 4.5 hours a day total will be enough for my body or not? I intend to find out.

[6:08am] Okay, three hours sleep down and I feel a little tired.  Could be just the usual wake up grogginess, we will see.  This morning is busy enough, so it will be a good test of my endurance.  Well, I have to start getting breakfast and all.. let you know how this works out.

[9:20am] Just got back from the first class, which finished an hour earlier than it usually does.  The content was stuff that I understood well enough, and as a bonus was not stuff I needed to know for the next test, so drifting off wasn't too bad this time around.. I did get 98% in the last test for this subject, so I am taking in enough.  Here, right before a computer keyboard I am not tired for some reason - maybe because fo the typing I am doing or something else.  Oh well.

[12:56pm] A quick note that the lunchtime class, which I have been able to drift to sleep in during the past was one I stayed awake in this time around.  The subject material was new, stuff that I didn't know offhand, so all good.

April 5th, 2007 - [2:28am] The naps have gone as planned, but lastnight at 1:30am I was tired so I decided to get 4.5 hours instead of 3.  I have been working on an assignment after watching a DVD, not feeling all that tired, so I will get 3 hours and see what happens during the day and night.  Even if I take one night on, one night off, I still gain some wakeful hours.

[9:36pm] GrrrrR!!!! There is still the one interruption that I can't get rid of no matter how hard I try (beside the dog, which I have started to learn to ignore).. my younger brother.  He came just over an hour ago, just right after I had gone to bed.. good news I wasn't sleeping - bad news he is still here making noise - hard to nap with a noise that can be more disruptive than the dog.  Hopefully he can leave soon so I can get a nap before my core sleep!!!

April 6th, 2007 - [8:54am] Well, last night was annoying.  I eventually got my nap, about 2 hours after I usually get it, and I was dead tired because I had only slept 3 hours in my last core sleep.  The nap was uneventfull - it was between the nap and core that things really got interesting.  I was sitting in front of the computer playing a couple of different webbased games that I just started playing recently and I was TIRED, to the point where I had troble keeping my eyes open - I was fine standing, but sitting for even a minute got to the point where I could have just gone to bed and slept right then - but I waited until it was time for my core sleep, this time at 1:30am so I could get the 4.5 hours core.

I woke up once during the night, and could have woken up then (it was 5am at the time, my usual wakeup being 6am), but I added 30 minutes to the alarm so that I wouldn't be woken up an hour into sleeping.  So here I am at 9am feeling quite wide awake, and ready to finish of an assignment due today.

April 7th, 2007 - [3:12am] Usually I would be taking my core sleep right now, but I managed to mis-set the alarm, mainly because it was used for last nights nap that went into the am.. so I set it for 10am rather than 10pm.. Biphasic can be rather forgiving of these lapses unlike polyphasic schedules like Uberman sleep - this is a minor problem, and I will not likely be effected by it at all.  It is mid-semester break, which means I can do pretty much anything I want sleep wise (within reason), even though I still have a few assignments to finish up.  Because of those asignments, I can't be trying anything drastic like Uberman, but I am thinking of perhaps trying it during the next break, which will be the break between semesters where I have no assignments whatsoever.  Besides, I can use the time before I have that break (I think it is about 10 weeks) to do some planning.  Uberman, or a variation of it is not something one can usually just acheive without the time to devote to attaining it, and the will to keep going - and until you have no commitments, the first slip would likely discourage and cause you to just give up because you need to be awake and able to concentrate to meet obligations.  Well, I guess I should get some sleep soon, even just a nap of 90 minutes to balance things out.

April 9th, 2007 - [12:42am] I decided that it is better if I stay on 6 hours of total sleep a day - this is already better than quite a few people have, and I find I get tired sooner with less sleep (Some might be going... 'Well Duh!') - Well, there is one assignment down, another three to go and I have my freedom.  If I have more than a week I might give polyphasic a go, just to experience what others who have tried have gotten - if it doesn't start working out (or I have too many setbacks) then I can just go back to biphasic.  We shall see.

April 11, 2007 - [9:25pm] Thought I'd try ployphasic sleep - I have chosen my sleep times, and I am going to give this a good shot - if I don't get it then it is not the end of the world - it is a learning experience.  Alarm is set, bed is ready - all I have to do is lay down for 30 minutes.. a little harder than it seems at first.
